What PRP is

Platelets circulate in everyone's blood. Platelet-rich plasma is simply plasma in which those platelets — and the growth factors they carry — have been concentrated well above their usual level, often in the range of five to ten times.

Because PRP is autologous, meaning it comes from your own body, there is no donor material involved. The concentration achieved varies with the preparation method, which is one reason PRP is not a single standardised product across clinics.

The process, step by step

  1. Blood draw. Roughly 30–60 ml is drawn from your arm.
  2. Centrifugation. The sample is spun to separate platelets from other blood components.
  3. Extraction. Approximately 3–6 ml of platelet-rich plasma is drawn off.
  4. Application. The concentrated platelets are applied to the area under consideration, raising local growth factor concentration.

The full appointment typically runs longer than the procedure itself, since preparation and post-procedure observation are part of the visit.

Areas PRP may be considered for

PRP is discussed in the published literature across a range of joint, tendon and soft-tissue concerns, including osteoarthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip and spine; rotator cuff tears; chronic plantar fasciitis; ACL injuries; pelvic pain and instability; back and neck injuries; tennis elbow; ankle sprains; tendinitis; and ligament sprains.

Whether it is appropriate in your case is a clinical question, answered by a licensed provider through a good-faith exam — not by a list.

What we will not tell you

We will not tell you PRP is proven, guaranteed, or a substitute for surgery. The evidence base varies considerably by indication, and it is stronger for some areas than others. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed, and all procedures carry potential risks and side effects.

As an emergency physician, I noticed that most of the people who came into the emergency department were there because of either a lack of information or difficult lifestyle choices. I couldn’t change people’s choices, but I could help those who simply hadn’t been taught how to care for themselves — so I started a clinic built around teaching people how to be healthy. In 2011, I attended my first regenerative medicine seminar. I followed the field for several years, attended more seminars, and in 2017 began offering regenerative therapy in my clinic. Education has always been at the heart of my work, and I believe deeply in what we do. I’m always glad to sit down with a patient, answer questions honestly, and talk through whether our approach might be right for them.
